Construction crews working on the Chateau Eau Plaines stormwater improvement project discovered deteriorated water mains in the neighborhood that need replacement. Much of the existing infrastructure in the Chateau subdivision, including the water main relays, are original from the 1970s. The native soils in the area are corrosive and the underground ductile iron pipes are deteriorating.
The Village Board on Monday, October 5, listened to Village staff comments and determined the project needed to move forward to address the failing infrastructure. The Board approved a professional service contract with RA Smith Inc. for design services on the Chateau Eau Plaines water main relay project. Chateau is located south of State Highway 50 and north of 82nd Street, between 104th and 115th Avenues.
The proposed project will consist of two phases. The first phase will focus on the replacement of water mains in the Chateau stormwater improvement project areas. The timing allows installing the replacement water mains in the current construction zones before repaving the roadways. The project will consist of relaying the existing water main, services, hydrants, and valves.
The overall estimated cost for the replacement project is $3,250,000 for phase one and $2,720,000 for phase two. The engineering for re-construction of the water mains is not in the 2020 budget. Village staff will include the project costs for phase one in the Water Utility Reserves budget for 2021. Funds for the second phase will come from subsequent year budgets.
